The global Greek diaspora gathered in New York City for the Hellenic Initiative’s 12th Annual Gala, raising funds to support Greece’s economic recovery and humanitarian effort.
The event, held at Cipriani Wall Street, honored Dean and Marianne Metropoulos, two prominent philanthropists who have pledged the majority of their wealth to societal causes through The Giving Pledge.
The evening highlighted a growing trend: diaspora communities leveraging their resources and networks to support countries facing economic challenges.
“What began 12 years ago as an effort to stabilize a struggling nation has evolved into a mission that contributes to global peace, security, and economic resilience,” said Andrew N. Liveris, THI Board Chairman and a co-founder.
The Metropouloses, whose philanthropy spans the arts, humanitarian aid, and economic development, see their work as part of a long tradition. “Philanthropy, which is very much a Greek concept since ancient times, is in all of our DNA. Dean and I feel it deeply,” said Marianne Metropoulos.
A Night of Celebration and Legacy
Themed “Dare to Dream,” the evening featured a seated dinner, and a performance by Greek singer Thanos Petrelis. Special appearances included Alexandra Stamatopoulou, a 2024 Paralympic gold medalist in swimming, and Antonios Tsapatakis, a silver medalist in the 100m breaststroke.
Guests also participated in a silent auction offering art, jewelry, and exclusive experiences donated by members of the Greek community worldwide.
According to THI, the event marked a high point for the organization’s mission of mobilizing the global Greek diaspora and supporting programs that foster economic recovery and entrepreneurial innovation.
Founded in 2012, THI has raised over $37 million for its programs. It funds crisis relief efforts and supports the development of entrepreneurial skills in Greece’s next generation of business leaders.
