A new lighting system for the iconic Temple of Poseidon — a Classical-era landmark in the country — is set for sunset on Monday afternoon, with the event livestreamed.
Perched atop Cape Sounion on the southeastern-most tip of the Attica prefecture, the Temple of Poseidon was first fully illuminated in 2004 as part of the Athens Olympic Games. Two decades later, with even more cutting-edge lightning technology now available, Metlen Energy & Metals, led by Chairman Evangelos Mytilineos, financed the relevant culture ministry’s proposal for a lighting upgrade.
The multinational undertook both the study and implementation of the project, aiming to offer visitors a refreshed visual experience while reinforcing Sounion’s status as a global cultural monument.
The new lighting system at the Temple of Poseidon, designed by lighting designer Eleftheria Deko, aims to embellish the archaeological and architectural significance of the monument in a unique way, offering new perspectives. Every component of the installation, including the fixtures, has been carefully positioned to ensure the daytime visual experience for visitors remains uninterrupted.
The system was inaugurated by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, with Evangelos Mytilineos also addressing the event, which was broadcast live by state-run network ERT and livestreamed.
Following the lighting ceremony, veteran Greek composer Stavros Xarchakos performed a musical tribute.
