The Brutalist (2024)

Brady Corbet’s sweeping epic follows László, a Hungarian architect and Bauhaus disciple, portrayed with striking intensity by Adrien Brody. Having survived the Holocaust, László sees America as the promised land, a place where his talent and hard work will secure his future. Yet, as his wife (Felicity Jones) warns in a letter, “The most enslaved is the one who thinks of himself as free.” This haunting notion underpins the film’s exploration of power, ambition, and disillusionment.
Instead of finding liberation, László becomes entangled in a ruthless web of exploitation—first under his cousin (Alessandro Nivola) and later under wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Beuren (Guy Pearce), who recognizes his brilliance only to manipulate it for personal gain. Despite the oppressive forces surrounding him, László remains steadfast in his devotion to architecture and beauty, his resilience becoming his only defense against a system designed to break him.
