A documentary on the Tempi railway disaster, called ‘Mamaerxomai’, will air on Netflix in Greece and Cyprus on Tuesday, September 10, announced MEGA TV.
Mamaerxomai is the first Greek documentary to make it to Netflix, according to MEGA TV’s morning show, and has been produced by Alter Ego Media SA.
The documentary is curated and presented by Anthi Voulgari, Directed by Giorgos Petropoulos, and executed by the GAP Filming Team.
The Story
The documentary includes emotional and chilling testimonies of the survivors of the Tempi train disaster, and accounts of the families of the 57 victims.
It journies through the cities where the passengers of the fateful train lived, capturing, with a narrative approach and cinematic aesthetic, the truth of that dreadful day and the unprecedented emotions that emerged with the dawn.
It delves into the oversights that led up to the disaster, the memories of those who survived, and the many questions that still remain about that fateful day where so many of Greece’s youth lost their lives.
The Tempi Train Disaster
The tragic train accident, which has come to be known as the Tempi railway disaster, unfolded at the southern entrance of the Tempi Valley gorge in north-central Greece. The incident, which occurred on February 28, 2023, claimed the lives of 57 individuals.
A passenger train, operated by Hellenic Train and carrying 350 passengers, predominantly students, departed from Larissa en route to Thessaloniki. However, it collided head-on with a commercial train from the same company. The catastrophic impact resulted in a massive explosion, engulfing the carriages in flames and leading to the loss of 57 lives.
The individuals who met their untimely death in the accident, spanning ages from 15 to 67.
Following the disaster, public outcry has surged due to perceived insufficient accountability and allegations of a government-endorsed cover-up.
