The latest repatriation of illicitly acquired and exported ancient artifacts involves three objects returned to Greek state ownership in Atlanta, Georgia.
The artifacts were turned over to Greece’s consulate in the southeastern US metropolis.
Specifically, one of the three artifacts is part of a marble tombstone dated to the 4th century BC. A representation on the marble slab shows the right hand of a smaller figure, undoubtedly a child. The second is an Attic funerary temple in Pentelic marble with a carved relief depicting a young girl standing with her head tilted slightly to the right. She is wearing a tunic with sleeves and an Attic veil draped under her chest. The artifact dates to 330-320 BC.
The third artifact is a small bronze statuette of a naked young man, possibly an athlete. He is depicted standing upright. This piece has been dated to around the late 2nd century BC.
