Every year on May 18, International Museum Day is celebrated with free admission to museums across Greece and a plethora of events like exhibitions and educational programs throughout May.
Established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, this day highlights museums’ societal role as agents of cultural exchange, fostering education, understanding, peace, and cooperation.
Each year, member countries explore a theme related to museums’ modern role through various events.
In Greece, the Greek branch of ICOM orchestrates cultural events nationwide throughout May and honors a Greek museum annually, serving as the focal point for celebrations.
For 2024, the Museum of Modern Greek Culture has been chosen for its significant scientific and educational contributions.
The main celebration will occur on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 7:00 pm in the Events Hall of the Museum of Modern Greek Culture at Monastiraki square, in the heart of the historical center of Athens.
Concurrently, the museum will offer guided tours and other activities with free admission for the public, requiring prior registration.
Additionally, museums and cultural organizations across Greece will host exhibitions and educational programs throughout May.
These activities are listed in a special brochure available digitally on the website https://icom-greece.mini.icom.museum/wp-content/uploads/sites/38/2024/04/IMD_2024_Program_WEB2.pdf
