Holi, the vibrant Hindu festival known as the “Festival of Colours,” begins on Thursday, heralding the arrival of spring in India and across the world.
Rooted in Hindu mythology, Holi symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, commemorating the legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakashipu, where unwavering devotion overcame tyranny. It also celebrates the divine love of Radha and Krishna, reinforcing themes of unity, joy, and renewal.

The festivities commence with Holika Dahan on the eve of Holi, during which bonfires are lit to signify the burning away of negativity and past grievances. The following day, Rangwali Holi, is marked by exuberant street celebrations as revelers douse each other in brightly colored powders and water while dancing to festive music.
Families and communities gather to share traditional treats, including gujiya—a sweet dumpling filled with khoya and nuts—and thandai, a spiced milk beverage often infused with bhang.

Some of the most spectacular Holi celebrations take place in northern and western India. Mathura and Vrindavan, deeply associated with Lord Krishna, host particularly grand festivities. Jaipur and Udaipur, known for their royal heritage, blend tradition with cultural performances, while major cities like Delhi and Mumbai feature large-scale public celebrations with music festivals and community events.
This year, Holi coincides with Goa Sunsplash’s “Holi Dub,” a one-day reggae event at Thalassa Beach Boutique Resort on Ashwem Beach. This fusion of music and festivities is expected to attract international audiences.

For those planning to celebrate Holi in 2025, it is advisable to wear old clothes, as the colors can be difficult to remove, and to book accommodations well in advance, particularly in popular festival hubs.
Holi’s global recognition continues to grow, earning it a place among the world’s most celebrated cultural festivals. While it may not be spring everywhere, anyone can embrace the festival’s vibrant spirit, colorful revelry, and festive treats.
