Greece praised Athens-born Yorgos Lanthimos for winning four Oscars for his film “Poor Things” during the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.
“Poor Things”, featuring Emma Stone, clinched Academy Awards for best makeup and hairstyling, best production design, best costume design, and best actress. This is Stone’s second Oscar.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis congratulated Lanthimos for his achievement via his Facebook account, adding that the 50-year-old filmmaker’s “distinct perspective and narrative prowess” have not only captivated global film enthusiasts but also instilled pride among Greeks.
Mitsotakis went on to add that Lanthimos’ pioneering work reflects “a Greece of continuous exploration, creativity, and advancement” and expressed hope that his artistic vision will continue to inspire in the future.
Echoing Mitsotakis, Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said the precious four Oscars solidified Lanthimos’ status as a creator of global appeal.
“Poor Things”, she said, offers a groundbreaking and invigorating glimpse into contemporary cinema and recognizes Lanthimos’ unique artistic journey. Mendoni went on to congratulate the director and the “exceptional cast” of “Poor Things.”
Alongside his Greek-language films, Lanthimos has garnered acclaim and Academy Award nominations for his English-language works, including Best Original Screenplay for “The Lobster” (2015), Best Director and Best Picture for “The Favorite” (2018), and 11 nominations and four Oscars for “Poor Things”, which also won the Golden Lion at the 80th Venice Film Festival last fall.
