The acclaimed ‘Democracy’ exhibition at the National Gallery of Greece concludes this weekend, offering visitors a final chance to explore its compelling narrative.

This showcase examines the role of art in resisting authoritarian rule in Southern Europe during the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on Greece, Spain, and Portugal. Through 140 artworks by 55 artists, the exhibition captures the artistic fight against dictatorship and the pursuit of democracy.

A collaboration between Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, Centro de Estudos Multidisciplinares Ernesto de Sousa, and private collections, the exhibition is open this weekend from 10am to 6 pm.

Greek Soloists perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Chamber Music at Megaron

Marking the 50th anniversary of Soviet-era composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s passing, the Athens Concert Hall presents a series of tribute concerts. Among them, “Chamber Music by Shostakovich II” stands out, featuring prominent members of the Athens State Orchestra.

George Mandylas, Vassilis Soukas (violin), Antilochos Tranos (viola), Asterios Pouftis (cello), and pianist Danae Karra will unite to perform three of Shostakovich’s chamber music masterpieces this Thursday, January 30 at 8:30 PM.

The program includes Piano Trio No. 2 and String Quartet No. 7, both imbued with themes of personal loss and mourning. Meanwhile, the Quintet oscillates between introspective melancholy, outbursts of despair, metaphysical reflection, and raw, earthy energy.

Athens-Iran 2nd Film Festival

In collaboration with the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Studio New Star Art Cinema hosts the 2nd Athens-Iran Film Festival, showcasing five contemporary Iranian films.

Running from February 1–5, the screenings offer free admission and include Greek and English subtitles, making them accessible to a diverse audience..

“The Bath” Bubble Show

Returning after sold-out performances, “The Bath”, Greece’s first Bubble Show, promises a whimsical experience blending theater, circus elements, and a world of soap bubbles.

At the end of a long day, there’s nothing more soothing than a bubbly bath. As ordinary people step into their bathtubs, water flows, soap bubbles shimmer with vibrant colors, imagination takes over, time dissolves, and the magic begins.

The show premieres on February 5 at Rektifie Theater (Konstantinoupoleos Ave. 119, Athens) and continues for four more Sundays at 12 PM.and more info on the show can be found here.

Theater of the NO concert “Φaretra Crystalina”

This Saturday at 10:30 pm, Theater of the NO hosts a captivating live performance by the lyrical folk ensemble Φaretra Crystalina.

The pioneering group will present selections from their debut EP, including a fresh interpretation of the Greek traditional song Lianohortaroudia. Their performance seamlessly weaves Mediterranean and Latin American melodies, Celtic tunes, and iconic Greek folk music into an enchanting sonic journey.

The concert will be held following the theater’s current production, the English comedy Sex Honestly.
