According to the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr, this year’s October saw the average of maximum daily temperatures fluctuate at exceptionally high levels almost nationwide, compared to the 2010-2019 period.
The data, collected by 51 stations operating across the country since 2010, shows Greece experienced the warmest October in the last 15 years in 2023, with average temperatures across all geographic regions reaching remarkably high levels.
The regions of Macedonia and Thrace recorded the highest positive temperature fluctuations, with monthly average values oscillating 3.5°C above the seasonal norms. The Thessaly region, Central Greece, Epirus, the Ionian Islands, Western Greece, and the Peloponnese were also exceptionally warm, registering temperature deviations of up to 2.8°C and 2.7°C above the seasonal averages, respectively.
In Athens, the average monthly maximum temperature deviation was +1.9°C, with 25 out of 31 days warmer than the seasonal averages. In Thessaloniki, 27 days of the month were warmer than the average for the 2010-2019 period, with the average maximum temperature of the month reaching +2.9°C above the normal levels.
