Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall in Attica

According to reports, a wider area in central Evia has also suffered power outages due to the weather

The extreme weather phenomena, including heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, have hit the east Attica region, Evia, and Lamia.

The Greek meteorological services had issued an extreme weather bulletin warning of thunderstorms, hail, and intense rainfall in the areas.

Drosia, a town in the East Attica regional unit and a suburb of the Athens agglomeration; Agios Stefanos, a city and a northern suburb of the Athens agglomeration; and Anoixi a suburb of Athens in East Attica are experiencing the effects of the bad weather.

Meanwhile, some roads in the city center of Lamia in central Greece are reported to be partly flooded.

Evia is also bearing the effects of heavy rain and thunderstorms, prompting authorities to divert traffic from a main route in a settlement in central Evia, Mistros, located about 30km from the largest city of the island, Chalkida, due to minor flooding which resulted in trees blocking the pass.

According to reports, the wider area has also suffered power outages due to the weather.

Earlier on Thursday, a fire broke out in north Evia after a lightning bolt struck a forest area, but it was rapidly put under control by respondents who rushed to the site.

Shortly after noon, authorities sent out the 112 alert text to Attica residents, warning of severe weather conditions.

According to the National Meteorological Service (EMY), rain and thunderstorms are expected in central, eastern, and northern regions, which will be locally intense. A gradual weakening of the phenomena is expected from the evening onwards.

Over 400 lightning strikes were recorded by the National Observatory of Athens’ meteo network in Attica, primarily in the northern and eastern suburbs in just two hours.
