The wave of severe weather sweeping across Greece continues, with Crete now bearing the brunt of the storm after heavy flooding hit several Cycladic islands, which began Monday afternoon, April 31. Authorities issued an emergency alert via the 112 public warning system, urging residents to remain cautious.

“Severe weather conditions, including strong local storms, are expected in Crete from now until the morning hours of April 2, 2025. Exercise caution when traveling and follow the instructions of the authorities,” the message warned.

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for western and southern Crete from late Tuesday night, April 1, into Wednesday morning, April 2.

Reports from the local mews outlet, Cretapost indicate that intense rainfall, accompanied by lightning, began hitting the city-port of Chania at around 8 a.m. Within minutes, roads were submerged, causing significant disruptions.

Firefighters were called in to rescue a trapped driver, while several vehicles became stranded, leading to widespread traffic chaos.

In a further incident linked to the extreme weather, a fire truck dispatched to assist with a rescue operation slid into a small ditch near a service road off the national highway, close to the Mournies interchange, south of Chania. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

As the storm continues, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.
