A new severe weather system is set to alter the weather landscape of Greece starting from the day of Epiphany, Jan. 6, bringing with it severe rainfall, storms and reinforced winds.
According to meteorologist Yiannis Kallianos in a recent post, the inclement weather is approaching from the Gulf of Lion, a maritime region in southern France and northeast Spain (Catalonia).
As per the weather forecast, from Saturday afternoon, the barometric low will firstly impact the western regions of Greece, coinciding with Epiphany.
By Sunday morning, the remaining areas of the country, primarily the western, northern parts, and the islands of the Eastern Aegean, will be affected. Simultaneously, southerly winds at sea will intensify, reaching speeds of 7-8, potentially with gusts up to 9 on the Beaufort scale.
According to Kallianos’ Facebook post, the greater Athens-Piraeus region will also experience these phenomena shortly after midnight on Saturday, although significant issues are not anticipated.
Lastly, from Tuesday, Jan. 9, colder weather is likely to arrive from the Balkan regions. However, it remains uncertain where rainfall and snowfall may occur.
According to meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas’ Twitter post:
“From late Saturday afternoon, the low centered in the Tyrrhenian Sea will start affecting the northwestern parts of the country, worsening weather conditions in most areas by Sunday.
Intense weather in localized areas on Sunday in Western Greece, Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, and the Dodecanese.
Winds on Sunday will be NW 5 to 7, locally reaching 8 over the seas and possibly up to 9 Beaufort in the Eastern Aegean, with slight weakening by the afternoon.”
