A powerful storm is currently hitting the southern suburbs of Athens, with rain also affecting the rest of the broader Attica prefecture. This marks the third day of severe weather, intensified by the presence of a cold pool affecting Greece. The phenomena are expected to worsen in the coming hours.

Shortly after 12:00, an emergency alert was issued via the 112 system for the Peloponnese, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to affect some areas from midday to the early evening, urging citizens to caution when traveling during these conditions.

According to the latest forecasts from the Greek meteorological bureau and the National Observatory of Athens, the ongoing weather conditions are expected to affect most parts of the country including the mainland, the Ionian Sea, the northern Aegean, and Crete.

In the Peloponnese and the mountainous regions of the mainland and Crete, the weather phenomena will be particularly intense, with a higher likelihood of hailstorms.

Caution is advised along coasts and beaches due to the potential for sudden storms, especially in the Ionian Sea and northern Aegean.

Rain and localized thunderstorms are also forecasted for the regions of Thessaloniki and the broader Athens and Piraeus region.

Through a social media post, the Director of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), Theodoros Kolydas, issued a warning specifically for the southern suburbs of Attica.

Theodoros Kolydas stated, “Pay close attention, especially in southern Attica, until 3 p.m., based on the nowcasting from Meteoblue.”
