Heavy rainfall hit several of Greece’s islands on Monday afternoon, turning roads in Paros’ capital city of  Naousa into fast moving torrents that swept away cars. The severe storm triggered a warning message from Greece’s civil protection authority for islanders to restrict all movements on roads.

The intense weather conditions, which were forecast by meteorologists for Monday afternoon, struck Paros in the form of a heavy downpour.

The rushing waters can be seen in videos, carrying away vehicles and causing significant damage. The rain continued for several hours with great intensity, leading to landslides that have also disrupted the island’s road network.

According to available information, reinforcements are expected to arrive in Paros from both Athens and the nearby island of Naxos.

A warning was sent to island residents via emergency number 112, stating, “Vehicle movement on the road network of #Paros is prohibited due to severe weather conditions. Emergency vehicles are exempt.”

Severe weather also struck Syros. Despite sunny skies in the morning, a heavy hailstorm hit shortly after 3 p.m.
