Last year marked an auspicious milestone for Greece, as 57% of the electricity generated in the country was derived from renewable energy sources (RES), such as solar, wind or hydroelectric units. That equates to over 25 TWh.
In comparison, RESs accounted for 50.12% of the power generated in 2022.
Over a 10-year period, electricity generated from RESs increased by nearly 150%, from a mere 8.64 TWh in 2014.
In fact, August 2023 witnessed the most “green power” ever generated in a single month in Greece, reaching 2.25 TWh.
According to the country’s independent power transmission operator, power production from renewable energy sources and hydroelectric dams did not fall below 1.5 TWh in any of the 12 months of the year.
In another eco-friendly development, the grid operator noted that the share of lignite in the country’s energy mix continued to shrink over 2023, dropping to a historic low of 10.1%.
