A strong 5.2 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded shortly before 8:30, Friday morning. The tremor was felt in Athens, while a significant aftershock was also recorded.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the earthquake location was 6 kilometers east of Prokopios Evia, an area 120km northeast of Athens, while the focal depth was 14.2 km.
A few minutes later, a strong aftershock of 3.7 Richter was also recorded, with an epicenter 11 kilometers west-northwest of Limniona Evia, with a focal depth of 5 kilometers.
Speaking to Public Broadcaster ERT, the President of the EARTHQUAKE PLANNING & PROTECTION ORGANIZATION (E.P.P.O.), Efthimios Lekkas said that the epicenter is in an area that does not produce large earthquakes. “It is likely that today’s earthquake is the ceiling,” he said.
