Numerous School Closures Due to First Major Snowfall

Affected prefectures include south-central Fthiotida and Fokida, a good portion of whose territory is mountainous

The first sustained snowfall of the current winter season in the northern and central highlands of mainland Greece, along with the mountain peaks further to the south, has led to a number of municipalities and districts announcing that schools will remain closed on Wednesday.

Affected prefectures include south-central Fthiotida and Fokida, a good portion of whose territory is mountainous, as well as the mountainous portions of Achaia prefecture, in the Peloponnese.

So far the level and rate of snowfall has not created significant problems in the country, although more precipitation – heavy in some instances – is forecast for Wednesday in much of the mountainous mainland, and even in the plains in northern Greece.

Early morning frost was forecast in the same regions.

Elsewhere, rain is forecast on the day, accompanied by low temperatures. Rainfall is also expected on the Aegean islands and Crete, regions that flirted with water shortages over the past summer due to lower-than-average precipitation over the previous year.
