Snowfall reached as far south as the mountain peaks surrounding the greater Athens-Piraeus region on Monday, as well as other mountainous regions in the southern half of the country.
Traffic leading up to Mt. Parnitha was halted during the day.
Meanwhile, in the northern half of the country, traffic restrictions were imposed for trucks and large vehicles, with snow tires required in many prefectures of northern Greece.
Rain, thunderstorms, continued snowfall and strong winds is the forecast for Tuesday. Also, sub-zero temperatures were forecast in much of the highlands of northern and central Greece.
The low front, the most intense so far during the ongoing winter season, has also activated Greece’s civil defense apparatus, as recent instances of intense weather – snowfall, flooding, etc. – caused major damages and disruptions.
Inclement weather is expected to ease on Wednesday.
