Bad weather continues to batter several regions across Greece with heavy rainfall, hail, and strong winds causing problems, including overturned vehicles, collapsed roads and fallen trees.
Dozens of trees have fallen across the country, cars have been overturned or crushed by broken branches, and tiles from house roofs have been ripped off, as extreme weather phenomena have descended on Greece since Saturday morning.
The northeast prefecture of Xanthi, in Thrace province, has borne the brunt of the weather, with hail storms and strong winds causing some damage.
In Kastoria, in western Macedonia, police have erected road signs diverting motorists from a collapsed section of the Florina-Kastoria road.
Authorities have effected a sailing ban for some of the country’s ports due to rough seas, reaching up to 9 Beaufort in some points of the Aegean Sea.
Ferry routes from the country’s largest port, Piraeus, are continuing as normal, however, with only the morning departure of the high-speed catamaran Champion Jet canceled.
Hydrofoil routes and some conventional vessels did not operate in the Saronic Gulf, while departures from the near-Athens ports of Rafina and Lavrio were cancelled.
In northern Greece, the ferryboat routes Alexandroupolis – Samothrace, Kavala – Prinos, and Keramoti – Thassos were canceled.
Passengers planning to travel today are advised to contact the local port authorities and tourist agencies before their departure for any changes or modifications to the itineraries that are expected to occur due to adverse weather conditions.
