A fire in the Pangaio region of Northern Greece, which is east of Thessaloniki, has been raging for 5 days, says TO VIMA.

According to reports, the fires have already burnt 12,000 hectares. Several media reports note that there is one, but also possibly two active fronts in the forests of Kavala and Serres.

The burnt areas are characterized by low vegetation and have had firefighters working day and night.

The report at TO VIMA notes that 280 firefighters, 46 vehicles, and 25 ground teams are working to contain the blazes.

Meanwhile, there are four aircraft and four helicopters fighting via aerial means and dropping water on the fires.

Greece’s civil protection authority has warned the public that the country remains at a high risk of fires and that all should be vigilant.

It is reminded that a recent report from the Copernicus Rapid Mapping Service and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), analyzed by Meteo.gr, showed that 13 major wildfires since 2017 have ravaged more than 700,000 acres of forest, underscoring the severe impact of these disasters on the region.

Within Attica, which has approximately 1.23 million acres of forested land, 450,000 acres—37% of the total forest area—have been scorched in the same period.

The devastating wildfire that erupted in Attica earlier this month alone scorched over 100,000 acres of land, destroyed hundreds of homes and claimed one life.
