Residents of Mykonos received an urgent emergency alert via the 112 warning system after both Mykonos and Paros were placed in a state of emergency due to extreme weather. The devastating storms that have battered the Cyclades over the past two days have left widespread destruction in their wake, prompting authorities to take immediate action.
The alert message read: “Activation. Warning message. Severe weather conditions on the island of Mykonos. Limit your movements to only those that are absolutely necessary and follow the instructions of the Authorities.”
Despite Mykonos experiencing a higher volume of rainfall than Paros, it has not suffered the same level of devastation. Reporting from Mykonos’ Little Venice, the Greek state television ERT correspondent described how emergency teams had to break through a coastal wall to redirect the surging floodwaters, which had formed an impassable torrent sweeping away everything in its path.
From the outset, business owners, residents, and response teams from both the Municipality and Civil Protection battled the floodwaters, striving to salvage what they could from the destruction.
Locals describe the deluge as unprecedented for Mykonos, with water levels reaching up to a meter in several areas.
In response, 30 municipal machines were deployed to restore road networks and repair damage to homes and businesses.
Meanwhile, residents took it upon themselves to clean up their properties, determined to be ready to welcome visitors ahead of the upcoming Easter celebrations.
