Snow and rainfall, accompanied by a precipitous drop in the temperature are forecast for Greece starting on Sunday, as the meteorological service reports a cold front will move into the region of western Macedonia.
According to the director of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), Theodoros Kolydas, an emergency weather bulletin is expected to be issued tomorrow, Saturday, to warn citizens of significant weather deterioration. Snowfall is anticipated not only in mountainous areas but also in low-altitude regions, while temperatures are forecast to drop by 8-10°C nationwide and by 5-7°C in Athens.
Speaking to the Greek TV channel Star TV, Kolydas stated: “Tomorrow, we will issue an emergency severe weather warning from HNMS. We are waiting for the latest data to be updated for greater accuracy before providing a clear picture of the weather situation.”
He continued, “Weather conditions will worsen starting Sunday around midday, initially affecting Western Macedonia, where we expect particularly heavy snowfall throughout the day, especially during the afternoon and evening. Snow will also fall across Macedonia, Thrace, and Epirus, not just in mountainous areas but also in semi-mountainous and low-altitude regions.”
Strong rains and thunderstorms are also expected in Western Greece, including the northern Ionian and Epirus, which will spread across all Ionian islands and the western mainland.
Mr. Kolydas concluded by noting that temperatures will drop significantly during the two-day period. “In Athens, the temperature drop will range between 5-7°C,” he emphasized.
