A civil defense notification was sent to mobile phones of users in the Igoumenitsa and Patra regions along western Greece on Monday due to a forecast for inclement weather, mainly heavy thunder storms and lightning, with the possibility of flash floods.
The forecast for summer squalls along the Ionian Sea coastline and islands lasts until early Tuesday afternoon.
Unprecendented rainfall fell last September in the central Greece province of Thessaly from the storm front “Daniel”, causing widespread and catastrophic flooding in the country’s “bread basket”.
The weather transformation comes after numerous days of hot, dry and windy conditions in much of Greece, elements that dramatically raise the risk for dreaded wildfires.
Meanwhile, a series of power interruptions on Sunday evening in parts of Larissa prefecture (central Greece, Thessaly) were not the result of weather phenomena but instead part of scheduled maintenance by the national grid trasmission operator (HEDNO or DEDDIE).
Corfu airport disruption
On the north Ionian island of Corfu, flights were interrupted in the morning due to the torrential rain that hit the popular holiday island.
