The Greek Ministry of Civil Protection declared the popular resort town of Arachova in a “state of emergency” on Wednesday due to water scarcity.
The current state will be in effect for one month, until December 6 that is, after which it will be lifted automatically.
This decision comes after months of very dry weather and minimal rain for the entire municipality of Distomo-Arachova-Antikyra, in an effort to curb the impact of water scarcity on the surrounding villages and prepare for a challenging winter.

Hope is not lost however, as MEGA meteorologist Giannis Kallianos announced that rains are finally expected to begin on Monday, bringing the months of drought to an end.

Water scarcity has become a main theme for Greece throughout 2024, as decreased rain and snowfall, prolonged heatwaves during the summer and increased water usage has led several islands to declare a state of emergency and authorities to be concerned over water shortages in Athens.
