Numerous high temperature records were broken in Greece over the first three months of the year, while the 2023-24 winter was the warmest on record for the country, according to preliminary data released by the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

When researchers at the meteo.gr service processed the data, it revealed that the temperatures in Greece during January and February 2024 were way above the seasonal averages.

This past winter also exceeded the previous overall high temperature record set for the season in 2015-16.

The daily high temperatures recorded by the 53 weather stations maintained around Greece by meteo.gr were above average for the specific day for most of January 2024. In the western Macedonia region, for instance, the daily high temperatures were as much as 3C above average.

2024 has also witnessed the hottest February in 15 years in northern Greece, according to meteo.gr, a subsidiary of the National Observatory of Athens.
