The 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, hosted by Kristen Bell and streamed live on Netflix, featured the outstanding achievements of actors across Hollywood.
In a surprising turn of events, Conclave secured the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, surpassing strong fellow nominees like Wicked and A Complete Unknown. Timothée Chalamet earned his first SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, edging out frontrunner Adrien Brody.
In his acceptance speech, Chalamet promised to use his award to further pursue being “one of the greats,” as he acknowledged many of his counterparts in the room were Hollywood icons and he, too, plans to be “one of the greats.”
Demi Moore was honored with Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in The Substance. In supporting roles, Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) received accolades for their performances.
In the television realm, historical drama series Shōgun dominated, winning four awards, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Cast members Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai were recognized for their individual performances, each receiving their first ever SAG Awards. Additionally, the well-loved comedy series Only Murders in the Building was awarded Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, welcomed by a shocked and delighted Selena Gomez, with Martin Short also taking home an individual award.
As host, Kristen Bell delivered some classic wit, including an original musical parody of “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” that highlighted actors in their early years. Jean Smart, reprising her role as Deborah Vance, added her own comedic twist to the evening, while Kieran Culkin’s unprepared yet hilarious acceptance speech closely resembled a stand-up-comedy routine and succeeded in garnering a few belly laughs. Another highlight was Jane Fonda receiving the 60th SAG Life Achievement Award and delivering a passionate speech emphasizing the importance of empathy in acting.

Overall, the evening provided memorable moments of levity and inspiration, with actors promising to keep on in the pursuit of all that acting symbolizes—an exciting preamble to the Academy Awards, which are set to take place March 3.
